Sexual Preferences

No.4, September:

What attracts us? Who attracts us? Why do we have the desires we have?

It is often understood (or at least implied) that all Namibians are heterosexuals, but we know this is not true. Some Namibians are homosexuals and others are bisexuals.

Those minorities are often neglected, and do not receive proper information regarding HIV/AIDS transmission, partly because only a few organisations cater for them, and partly because of the negative attitudes in political circles surrounding homosexuality.

I hope and trust this issue will again encourage debate and discussion. We need to understand our own sexuality and respect the sexuality of others if we ever want to win the battle against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It may be a difficult challenge, since it also forces us to address cultural taboos and discuss our own fears, but it is a necessary step in the fight against this disease.
