In June, OYO began working in collaboration with the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) in Namibia on a very exciting project.
At the end of 2005 it was estimated that Namibia – a country of just under 2 million people – is home to approximately 120,000 orphans and vulnerable children (UNICEF). The CfBT was interested in hearing from these young people: in learning more about the specific obstacles they face, and about how they feel. Their aim was to be able to raise awareness of the needs of many Namibian children whose lives have been shattered by the death of one or both parents.
Because OYO works across a large area of Namibia with young people, the CfBT approached us to help implement their idea – an essay competition, aimed at encouraging orphans and other vulnerable children to speak out and have their say.
The competition was launched, and we received over 200 entries. Well done to everyone who submitted an essay – all the entries were read with great interest. OYO is delighted to announce that we have a winner – Frances from Luderitz takes the first prize of N$1,000 of school supplies.
There are over 20 prize winners – second and third prizes, and runners up - who deservedly are taking possession of free school supplies. Our thanks also go to the many judges who gave their valuable time free of charge, and to the CfBT for their support
