OYO’s regional offices made important contributions to the World AIDS Day commemorations across the Erongo and Kunene regions this December.
In Erongo the OYO office played a leading role in the organisation of a regional Drama competition in Arandis. On 7th December, 6 youth groups representing communities from throughout the region battled against one another for the hallowed first prize. Judging criteria not only drew upon performance skills but also on whether or not the groups passed on responsible messages on the theme of leadership in the time of HIV and AIDS.
At the award ceremony, held as part of the regional RACOC organised event on 8th December, it was remarked that judging was very difficult because all groups performed to an exceptional standard. Not only did they communicate important messages on the stage but they also took these messages onto the streets of Arandis where their behaviour was exemplary. Even so, the judges were finally able to agree on the following prizes:
1st Prize:
Otjimbingwe Youth Group
2nd Prize:
Walvis Bay Youth Group
3rd Prize:
Usakos Youth Group
In Kunene, the OYO office in Opuwo celebrated its World AIDS Day event in Oshifo with Medicos Del Mundo. This was a great opportunaty for the Oshifo youth group to show the local community all that they had learnt. Furthermore, it marked the first time that World AIDS Day activities took place in Oshifo. OYO’s other Kunene office in Khorixas joined the regional RACOC event in Sesfontain. Sesfontain had been put forward as the location of the regional event after OYO’s continued hard work with the community that year. Among other things the Sesfontain youth group performed songs and dances and an OYO stand was present.
