OYO dance troupe in Capetown
OYO dance troupe performed inCape Town on Thursday 29 April at the Clipper event. After eight weeks rehearsals, the troupe was ready for its show and presented three pieces:
- Whose fault is it? following the journey of a young girl (PaulinaTjitana) who has to face responsibilities she cannot handle alone at a young age. This piece is inspired by recent report of baby dumping by teenage mums in various parts of the country. It tries to question what can lead a young girl to such a desperate act.
- I’m not alone, inspired by the music of Leonard Zhakata. This piece looks at the issue of stigma and discrimination. Only once the whole community stands up and fight together, only once we are not alone anymore, can a difference be made.
- Modern love, a tribute to those who have died of an AIDS related illness and have been forgotten.
All pieces were well received. Among the audience were two members of the Namibian parliament, Hon. Tjihuiko and Hon. Kavetuna, who came to congratulate the performers at the end of the event.
Prior to the event, the troupe performed at the National Theatre of Namibia on Friday 23 April where it presented whose fault is it?, I’m not alone and colour blind, a new piece by OYO’s director Philippe Talavera, dealing with the issues of racism and xenophobia. The show met great success among the audience and was recorded by our local broadcast, NBC. Extracts will be presented in the famous entertainment program, Tutaleni.
Through this project, the dance troupe has met many people and started encouraging links. We hope we’ll be able to continue our work with Leonard Zhakata from Zimbabwe and continue to interact with many interesting artists around the world.
