OYO receives support from OYO Scotland

Map of Scotland

In order to ensure sustainability of our actions, share knowledge and expertise, we are in the process of establishing OYO Scotland.

OYO Scotland is a Scottish company (company number SC384596) registered as a charity with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (charity number SC041769). It will be officially launched during a ceremony at the Scottish Parliament on 12 January 2011. However, it has already started operating and we are really excited about this venture.

The first action of OYO Scotland was preparing to tour our exhibition ‘Still Life’. ‘Still Life’ is a collection of photographs taken by people who are living with HIV that depicts positive moments in their lives. It tackles the stereotype that once you have tested HIV positive, it is the end of the world. On the contrary it encourages positive living and positive thinking. ‘Still Life’ will tour in different provinces of Scotland and will be presented at the Scottish Parliament on 12 January 2011.

The second action is the visit by Jane Salmonson, potential trustee for OYO Scotland, to Namibia from 24 to 26 November. Jane will meet with the staff and trustees of OYO Namibia to discuss the way forward and assess how best to collaborate. She will also meet some of OYO’s beneficiaries.

Finally the OYO Namibia founder and director, Philippe Talavera, will visit Scotland at the beginning of January 2011 to develop a plan of action with various interested parties in Scotland.

OYO Scotland aims at:

  • developing art and education links with OYO Namibia. It is envisaged that an exchange of skills and knowledge will happen between the two countries. This will take the form of youth exchange, expert exchange and arts project exchange;
  • being a learning tool for young people between the two countries. While some issues are different (for instance HIV is much more prevalent in Namibia than in Scotland) other social issues are similar (teenage pregnancy, alcohol and drug abuse). By working on similar social issues, young people from both countries can learn from each other;
  • supporting OYO Namibia’s fundraising strategy. OYO Scotland aims at raising awareness in Scotland and Europe about the work done by OYO Namibia and will support OYO Namibia’s fundraising efforts.
