Khorixas youth group had prepared a comprehensive performance for its tour to the Omusati region in June. Prior to the tour, the group performed in its own community for the celebration of the African Child Day. The show was well-received and the local representatives from the Kunene Regional Youth Forum were very impressed.
Mr Karimbue, Regional Coordinator for the Kunene Regional Youth Forum, approached OYO with the idea to tour the group in its own region. It became an exciting initiative, with many local partners involved:
- The Khorixas youth group performed
- The Kunene Regional Youth Forum organised transport, accommodation in Sesfontein, meals and the community shows
- OYO organised rehearsals, transport, accommodation in Kamanjab and the school shows
- RACOC (Regional AIDSD Coordinating Committee) paid for the meals
- Medicos del Mundo paid for the rehearsals and part of the accommodation in Kamanjab
Such combination of efforts is obviously most welcome and the way forward. Rehearsals took place from 21 to 23 July, under the leadership of OYO’s production coordinator M. Kamati. On 24 and 25 July, the group benefited from a dance workshop with Sisi.
On 26 July the group started the mini-tour, visiting Sesfontein, Warmquelle, Bergseg, Anker, Erwee, Kamanjab and Fransfontein. Despite various technical problems (gravel roads in those areas are bad hence several punctures were experienced and the trailer got damaged too), the shows were successful. The drama was translated in khoekhoegowab, the local dialect. Community shows in particular were extremely well received.
It was a great experience for the youth involved to showcase their talents in their own region. People were impressed and all the partners involved in this venture have realised the benefit of such collaboration. We expect to see more of such programs in the future.
