16 February 2008 - Khorixas Valentines Day

OYO’s Khorixas office urges community members to get tested this Valentine’s Day.

On Valentine’s Day in Khorixas, the OYO office organised a talent contest for local youth on the theme of HIV testing.

“We simply want people go away from this event and get tested.”  The goal was plainly put by OYO senior assistant, Niques Tjipura.  “We know a lot of young people and other elders would never go for the test. . . for whatever reason, but . . . it’s very important that they know their HIV status in order for them to access treatment and to protect their loved ones,” added OYO regional coordinator, Alpha Sililo.

With performances from groups based at both Goreseb and Welwitchia Schools, the event drew a crowd of over 400 people to the Khorixas Multi-Purpose Centre.  Highlights included a moving drama from the Welwitchia learners as well as the powerful song called “go for the test with your partner,”  written by the Goreseb learners. Mr Muwondha, a teacher basesd at Goreseb School, also provided a motivational speech.
