Rehearsals in Arandis

Arandis group learning a song

This year OYO selected the dynamic youth group in Arandis and organised with them a workshop from 01 to 05 February 2010. Arandis is located 60km away from the coast. It is a mining area (Uranium) and has a large population of young people who migrate to the town in search of work.

During the workshop, the following was achieved:

  1. The group created a drama in seven parts dealing with the issue of multiple sexual partners. The group was invited to reflect on possible consequences of having multiple sexual partners (HIV infection, pregnancy, jealousy). A drama was devised. The drama was written by the youth and directed by OYO’s director Philippe Talavera. The group further received training in voice warm up, body language and basic acting. They went through various games (splat, torpedo, the spear) and exercises (tongue twisters, emotion games, make as you go along) to help them with articulation, projection and acting.
  2. The group learned a dance, ‘the killing’, choreographed by OYO’s director. Through this work the group was challenged physically (to perform some of the moves) and intellectually (to remember the counts and sequences). By the end of the workshop there was still some polishing to be done but the dance had been created.
  3. The group created two songs: break the chain (encouraging young people to stop having multiple sexual partners) and what will you tell your child? (dealing with the consequences of getting pregnant and not knowing who the father of the child is). They further learnt a song that was created by the Opuwo youth group, last night. Again the songs were ready by the end of the workshop but still needed polishing.

The group was very committed, very receptive to the training and made good progress throughout the week. It has strong actors and actresses, such as Butterfly, Melodie and Dennis and has a great potential.

Preparing the next steps

A second workshop is scheduled for 03 to 07 March and the last workshop from 12 to 18 March. The group, if successful, will then be invited to go on tour from 19 to 27 March to the Otjozondjupa region.
