African dance in Opuwo

Dancing in Opuwo

The Opuwo youth group was privileged to receive the visit by well-known South African Namibian based dancer, Sisi. Sisi is the artistic director of the Omaleshe group in Oshakati and specialises in working with children and young people, teaching them African Dance. Zulu by origin, she brings to her dance a strong flavour.

Together with Sisi, the group learnt five new dances: ‘Single lady’ and ‘Vuka’ that will be used as part of the OYO festival in September, ‘ouin ouin’, ‘you are not alone’ and ‘kwela’. Those dances are very physical and require lots of energy.

Both ‘Single lady’ and ‘Vuka’ are very dynamic. They have been taught to the Khorixas youth group and will be taught to the Uis and Arandis youth groups. Then in September when the four groups meet, they will be performed as a big ensemble. This is likely to have a big impact on the audience!

Participants and Sisi

The Opuwo youth group, comprising 20 to 22 members, thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. On the last day, they had a chance to have a mini presentation at the community centre. The workshop was sponsored by Medicos del Mundo and all those present enjoyed the performance. Sisi was pleased with the performance. She had a good time with the group and enjoyed working with them. We all hope this is not the last time she will be visiting us!
